Better Call Saul and Environmental Illness

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Environmental Illness. Electromagnetic Sensitivity. Paranoid Schizophrenia. Depression. Agoraphobia.
All of these words are being thrown about regarding the new show “Better Call Saul”. We can look at this show from a number of sociological perspectives. One, we can see the show as sad that a person who is very obviously suffering and ill is being held up for us to watch writhe and suffer- for our collective entertainment. Two,  we can see that this show is a good thing that MCS, Environmental Illness, Electromagnetic Sensitivity, Paranoid Schizophrenia, Depression, and Agoraphobia are being brought up in the public eye, no matter how perverse the context using Better Call Saul and Environmental Illness. Why? Because at least it is being brought up to the public eye and not being buried under the proverbial rug.

Better Call Saul and Environmental Illness

Some doctors think Environmental Illness is a kind of delusion. If that is the case, then it must
Better Call Saul Schizophrenia be some kind of mass delusion that happens all over the world, see mapping project of people with MCS . Thank God for doctors who hold that EI is a physical illness. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) are board certified doctors of physical medicine who hold that mental illness can predispose people to MCS, EI, and ES. However, as opposed to the MDs of the American Medical Association, doctors of Environmental Medicine strongly state that these are physical illnesses. Not everyone who has depression or schizophrenia chokes on the perfume of their loved ones. Conversely, not everyone who has Environmental Illness has a mental illness. This is a new subset of people that are injured in a way we don’t yet fully understand.

Better Call Saul and Electromagnetic Illness

The position of the The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) could not be clearer:

“For over 50 years, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has been studying and treating the effects of the environment on human health. In the last 20 years, our physicians began seeing patients who reported that electric power lines, televisions and other electrical devices caused a wide variety of symptoms. By the mid 1990’s, it became clear that patients were adversely affected by electromagnetic fields and becoming more electrically sensitive. In the last five years with the advent of wireless devices, there has been a massive increase in radiofrequency (RF) exposure from wireless devices as well as reports of hypersensitivity and diseases related to electromagnetic field and RF exposure. Multiple studies correlate RF exposure with diseases such as cancer, neurological disease, reproductive disorders, immune dysfunction, and electromagnetic hypersensitivity.”

Environmental Illness and Wikipedia

Some well-meaning but wrong Wikipedia editors seem to be strongly biased against these very real diseases, see: Edited Strongly Biased Wikipedia Page on MCS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity . I hope this blog post can help educate the public about these very real and difficult to live with Environmental Illnesses and even motivate action on a local, state, national, and even global level. It is so hard to live with this disorder. People who do suffer from these illnesses need to treated with dignity because their lives are already a living nightmare.

Pall ML’s Latest Paper about Nrf2… Exciting? See Free fulltext…

Sheng Li Xue Bao. 2015 Feb 25;67(1):1-18.

Nrf2, a master regulator of detoxification and also antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other cytoprotective mechanisms, is raised by health promoting factors.

Abstract

The transcription factor Nrf2, nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2, activates the transcription of over 500 genes in the human genome, most of which have cytoprotective functions. Nrf2 produces cytoprotection by detoxification mechanisms leading to increased detoxification and excretion of both organic xenobiotics and toxic metals; its action via over two dozen genes increases highly coordinated antioxidant activities; it produces major anti-inflammatory changes; it stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and otherwise improves mitochondrial function; and it stimulates autophagy, removing toxic protein aggregates and dysfunctional organelles. Health-promoting nutrients and other factors act, at least in part by raising Nrf2 including: many phenolic antioxidants; gamma- and delta-tocopherols and tocotrienols; long chain omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA; many carotenoids of which lycopene may be the most active; isothiocyanates from cruciferous vegetables; sulfur compounds from allium vegetables; terpenoids. Other health promoting, Nrf2 raising factors include low level oxidative stress (hormesis), exercise and caloric restriction. Raising Nrf2 has been found to prevent and/or treat a large number of chronic inflammatory diseases in animal models and/or humans including various cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, lung diseases, diseases of toxic liver damage, cancer (prevention), diabetes/metabolic syndrome/obesity, sepsis, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, HIV/AIDS and epilepsy. Lesser evidence suggests that raising Nrf2 may lower 16 other diseases [including depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia]. Many of these diseases are probable NO/ONOO(-) cycle diseases and Nrf2 lowers effects of NO/ONOO(-) cycle elements. The most healthful diets known, traditional Mediterranean and Okinawan, are rich in Nrf2 raising nutrients as apparently was the Paleolithic diet that our ancestors ate. Modern diets are deficient in such nutrients. Nrf2 is argued to be both lifespan and healthspan extending. Possible downsides to too much Nrf2 are also discussed. Nrf2 is not a magic bullet but is likely to be of great importance in health promotion, particularly in those regularly exposed to toxic chemicals.

Un Homme New Yorkais avec la Schizophrénie: Une Autobiographie (livre kindle)

Schizophrenie Autobiographie

Un Homme New Yorkais avec la Schizophrénie: une Autobiographie is the title of my autobiography in French. It was just accepted onto Amazon. It translates as “A New Yorker with Schizophrenia: an Autobiography”.  The original title “A Schizophrenic Will” would have lost its double entendre in French, so I went with a descriptive title so my French readers wouldn’t have a title lost in translation. The e-book is now available on all Amazon Kindle platforms. Vive la France! Vive la revolution! I am proud to say that I translated the book myself, thanks in part to Fountain House’s support of my French studies.  I wish the book “Bon chance!”
