For those new to the name William Jiang, his following book is highly recommended: `A Schizophrenic Will: A Story of Madness, A Story of Hope‘. William Jiang was the Chief Librarian of the New York State Psychiatric Institute Patient and Family Library, affiliated with Columbia University, for seven years. That book and his book on GUIDE TO NATURAL MENTAL HEALTH focused on the knowledge about Complementary and Alternative Health treatments for select mental issues that he gleaned over seven years of following the mental health literature during that time. The thrust of the book is mental

health, nutrition, and complementary therapies. Now Mental Health Author and Advocate William Jiang extends his expertise on nutrition and offers this excellent book on NATURAL WEIGHT LOSS AND DIABETES CONTROL.

In Will’s Introduction he states his motivation: ‘The link between body and mind has been known for over two thousand years, and yet we think we can eat that Big Mac and not suffer consequences. There is a strong link between that fast food and obesity, diabetes, clinical depression, and other serious problems of body and mind. Indeed, even clinical depression and schizophrenia can possibly be prevented by a healthy diet… A word of caution: one should ALWAYS check an individual vitamin or supplement against your medical condition list, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, and also each nutraceutical should be checked against the medications and other vitamins and minerals one is taking. For example, if somebody has high blood pressure, it would behoove them to avoid salt, or alternatively there may be an interaction between their heart medicine and grapefruit juice. Also, it is a good rule to change one nutraceutical or strategy at a time, rather than changing around everything, all at once. That way, you know what works for you and what does not… This annotated bibliography picks the “best” information from the medical literature, sometimes includes commentary as well as the source, title, authors, and abstract of the article from MEDLINE.The book is rich in information about such controversies as high fructose corn syrup, bleached white flour, the glycemic index, microbiota, fish oil, krill oil, whey, magnesium and fiber-weight loss-diabetes control. Will surveys the world cuisines (the great Hunter/Gatherer Diet, Mediterranean diet, Asian diet, Latin American diet, European diet, Middle Eastern diet) as well as the role of fruits, veggies and fermentation, neutraceuticals, the role of exercise – all of these in relation to diabetes control and prevention.

In his closing comments Will states, ‘The literature provides some, although limited, evidence about interventions and approaches that may prevent weight gain. Although there is not strong evidence to promote a particular weight gain prevention strategy, there is no evidence that not adopting a strategy to prevent weight gain is preferable. The Seasons of the Year and Weight Gain Our weight gain or loss is not only is changed by our circadian, or daily, rhythms of life, but also our circumannual, or yearly, body clocks. We cannot escape the Earthly rhythms of the seasons on our basic biology.’

Well documented, well written and full of important facts, this is a strong book that should be added to the nutrition library of every household. Grady Harp, June 16
